Things to see and do in French Polynesia

French Polynesia is composed with 118 islands (76 of which are inhabited) divided into five archipelagos. As you would need to plan a very long stay to appreciate all the wonders, we have selected for you some of the must-see places in this land of Eden. There really is something for everyone!

What to see in French Polynesia?

If beaches and translucent, palm-fringed seas appeal to you, you'll be delighted by the islands of Maupiti, Moorea and Bora Bora. You'll have to go by boat to discover the Marquesas Islands, with the pink sands of Fakarava atoll and its black sand beaches embellished with bays, the ancient islands of Tuamotu, and Nuku Hiva's Taipivai waterfall. Take the opportunity to "walk in the footsteps" of Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel. In Bora Bora, you must see the motus, islets of coral sand that spread out like atolls all around the island. This is where you'll find the island's most beautiful beaches and its magnificent lagoon. To discover the true aroma of quality vanilla, you'll need to visit at least one of the many vanilla plantations that have sprung up on the island of Tahaa, producing 80% of all Polynesian vanilla. The island also boasts a number of typical pearl farms, where you'll find the famous black pearls and other varieties in all shades and sizes.

The lagoons of the Pearl of the Pacific

The island of Raiatea is home to a renowned archaeological site, considered "sacred" in Polynesian tradition. Another special Polynesian activity is to take a few moments to meditate at the Marae de Taputapuatea (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site). On the Temehani plateau, you'll have the chance to get up close and personal with the island's endemic flower, the tiare apetahi. In recent years, Raiatea's modern marina has become the starting point for sailboat cruises in French Polynesia. A must-see detour is Maupiti, where you can admire the lagoon from the top of the island, and the superb beach of Tereia, calm and as authentic as ever. A climb to the top of the island offers a breathtaking view of the lagoon's coral "lace". If you have a little more time to spare, add a visit to the churches of the Gambiers and the caves of Ruturu (Austral Islands) to your agenda.

What to do in French Polynesia

If you're traveling to Polynesia, you'll be bound to land at Tahiti International Airport. It's a good opportunity to start your trip with a visit to this lively island of 184,000 inhabitants. Papeete, in particular, is the place to be if you want to experience the local restaurants and bars, tour the open-air markets and glean from stalls of all kinds. To celebrate with the local population, remember that in July, Tahiti and all the other islands host the Heiva i Tahiti, a major festival of Polynesian culture. Music, traditional dance, competitive sports, beauty contests and fishing tournaments are all on the program. It's an excellent opportunity to sample Polynesian gastronomic specialties. Tahiti is also the perfect island for mountain climbing, with spectacular views over the lagoon and Moorea. Daredevil climbers will be delighted to scale the 2,066-metre summit of Aorai! You'll also have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities, including surfing, diving or snorkeling in the coral reefs of Bora Bora, to see fish such as rays and sharks, or to take beautiful photos of the Tuamotu archipelago or the waterfalls and mountains that can be found on the various islands.  You can also rent a car or go on a cruise to discover the marvellous places hidden in this archipelago. You can also go on excursions to some of the world's most beautiful hotels, surrounded by the wildlife and unique white sands of Rangiroa, Huahine or Motu, which will undoubtedly provide you with the best experience of your life, alone or with your family.
