To discover the true aroma of quality vanilla, you'll need to visit at least one of the many vanilla plantations that have sprung up on the island of Tahaa, producing 80% of all Polynesian vanilla. The island also boasts a number of typical pearl farms, where you'll find the famous black pearls and other varieties in all shades and sizes.

The island of Raiatea is home to a renowned archaeological site, considered "sacred" in Polynesian tradition. Another special Polynesian activity is to take a few moments to meditate at the Marae de Taputapuatea (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site). On the Temehani plateau, you'll have the chance to get up close and personal with the island's endemic flower, the tiare apetahi. In recent years, Raiatea's modern marina has become the starting point for sailboat cruises in French Polynesia. A must-see detour is Maupiti, where you can admire the lagoon from the top of the island, and the superb beach of Tereia, calm and as authentic as ever. A climb to the top of the island offers a breathtaking view of the lagoon's coral "lace". If you have a little more time to spare, add a visit to the churches of the Gambiers and the caves of Ruturu (Austral Islands) to your agenda.
