Car rental, cab or VTC? Getting around Miami by car
If you want to be totally self-sufficient when traveling from Paris to Miami, renting a car is the best option. Traffic in Miami is fairly dense, but more fluid than in other major cities like Paris. And you'll easily find paid parking spaces along the way.
If you need a car on an occasional basis, for example to get home from a party, think of the mythical yellow cabs, which are a real attraction for foreign visitors. However, these vehicles are less numerous and more expensive than in New York. VTC companies, such as Uber and Lyft, are a preferred solution for getting around Miami by car. You'll have little waiting time whatever the time of day, and the fare will be less expansive than with a cab.
Public transport in Miami
Miami has an excellent public transport network. It consists of the Metrorail, a two-line aerial metro, and the Metrobus, with a hundred bus lines covering the whole county. The Easy Ticket costs 2.65 euros, regardless of the distance traveled within a 3-hour period. To get around Miami mainly in this way, it's best to opt for an Easy Card package. Opt for unlimited travel for 24 hours for 5.65 euros, or for seven consecutive days for 29.25 euros.
There are two other free options for getting around Miami by public transport:
- The Metromover ;
- The trolley ;
The former is a three-line aerial metro located in the downtown area, and interconnected with the Metrorail and buses. The second appeals to travelers for its retro feel, with trolleys reminiscent of San Francisco's Cable-Cars.
Getting around Miami by bike
Citi Bike is a public bike rental system that allows you to pay by the hour, by the week or with an unlimited pass. Simply pick up a bike at one of the city's pay stations, then drop it off at another pay station when you no longer need it.
An ecological, economical and healthy option, it's especially worth it for getting around Miami Beach, where distances are shorter than in Miami City. In particular, you can use your bicycle on the bike path that runs along the beach. Looking for something different? Try the Segway, a gyropod that can be rented in the same way as shared bikes, or try rollerblades for a sporty ride!
