New York taxis

If there's one city in the world where taxis are an iconic mode of transportation, it's unquestionably New York! Bright yellow in color, they are a tourist attraction in themselves. Dreaming of taking one to get around Manhattan? Here's everything you need to know about them.

Which taxi should I take in New York?

Contrary to what one might think, there are several types of taxis in New York, of different colors. However, the most common and economical ones are the famous yellow taxis. Also known as "yellow cabs," they are absolutely everywhere in the city! So, how do you know which taxi to take? It's very simple: if the sign on the roof is lit, the taxi is available. In that case, just raise your hand towards the sky to make it stop. On the other hand, if the sign is off, the taxi is not accepting passengers anymore.

You may also come across green taxis, known as "Boro Taxis," which are only allowed to pick up passengers in certain boroughs of the city (Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens...), but not in the central Manhattan area.

What is the price of a taxi in New York?

Generally, when you get into a taxi in New York, the meter starts at $2.50 as a minimum fare. After that, the fare is $0.50 for every 0.2 miles, which is approximately 300 meters. Note that prices are slightly higher during heavy traffic (New York rush hours, typically between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM) or at night.

If your route includes tolls, you will need to pay these separately. When the taxi driver has to wait for you, they charge $0.40 per minute.

Lastly, it's customary to tip the driver around 20 to 30% of the fare. Taxi fares can be paid directly in cash or by credit card inside the taxi.

How to tell your taxi driver your destination?

If you truly want to take a taxi like a New Yorker, and not like a tourist, know that locals usually give an intersection of streets as their destination rather than a precise address. They do not typically provide a specific address. So, identify beforehand the nearest intersection to where you want to go.

To get into the New York vibe right upon arrival, note that it's entirely possible to reach the center of Manhattan from Newark Airport by taxi. However, budget around a hundred dollars for the fare.
