The cirques in Reunion Island

Reunion Island is an exceptional land composed of preserved nature, offering visitors extraordinary landscapes to discover. In this regard, three cirques are nestled around its highest peak, Piton des Neiges. These are the cirques of Salazie, Mafate, and Cilaos. Each of them has its own characteristics, but all three are must-visit territories if you are passing through Reunion Island.

A cirque : what is it?

When we talk about "cirques" in geography, it has absolutely no connection to a spectacle. It refers to a natural enclosure formed by steep and mountainous walls, usually in a circular shape. In other words, cirques are remnants of erosion and are located on the slopes of a mountain massif.

The three Reunionese cirques

The three cirques of Reunion Island are among the most beautiful testimonies of its perpetual evolution, between volcanic power and erosion. This has led to significant landslides, giving birth to immense and lush cirques.

Cilaos

The Cilaos cirque is the southernmost on the island. It enjoys a temperate climate and is located at an altitude of about 1700 meters. Its vegetation resembles that of European summits and includes numerous conifers. However, Cilaos is primarily known for its picturesque beauty and isolation. To get there, you'll need to arm yourself with patience... Indeed, the village of Cilaos is only accessible via the "road with 400 turns"! From the coast, expect about a 1 hour and 30-minute journey. You will then reach the charming little village of Cilaos, renowned for its lentils.

From Cilaos, many hiking trails are accessible, including the one to reach the summit of Piton de la Fournaise!

Moreover, note that this majestic setting is also a true paradise for sports enthusiasts. Indeed, it is possible to practice climbing, mountain biking, forest acrobatic courses, or even canyoning. Upon your return from these activities, indulge in leisurely walks through the streets of Cilaos, as well as the contemplation of its superb Creole architecture and its countless flower gardens. Likewise, the alleys of Cilaos are filled with numerous artisanal shops.

Mafate

Another particularly unique place in Reunion Island, the Mafate Cirque is only accessible by foot or helicopter. It offers a world of its own, almost disconnected from reality. Located furthest to the west, it is steeped in history: Mafate was once a refuge for runaway slaves. Comprised of several small settlements, the Mafate Cirque maintains Réunionese traditions. This results in villages far from modern hustle and bustle, particularly authentic and timeless. The largest among them, La Nouvelle, still boasts a school and a grocery store, supplied by air. Here, marked trails are abundant, and nature reigns supreme!

Salazie

Finally, the Salazie Cirque is the furthest east. Characterized by its very humid climate, it ranks among the rainiest places on the planet. Indeed, it rains very often and in significant quantities there! However, this allows it to benefit from majestic nature, enhanced by numerous waterfalls.

While the population of the Salazie Circus is quite scattered, the main tourist attractions are located near the village of Hell-Bourg. A starting point for many hikes, it also offers a superb view of the Piton des Neiges. Since 1998, it has also held the label of "Most Beautiful Villages of France." Note that it is also in the Salazie Circus where you can find the most beautiful traditional houses and gardens of Reunion Island. If you are passing through this natural gem, do not miss the opportunity to discover the Veil of the Bride, a breathtaking waterfall.

The lush nature, as well as the exceptional fauna and flora of Reunion Island, make it a territory of unparalleled beauty in the world. In this regard, 42% of Réunion is listed as UNESCO World Heritage.
